I just watched the movie The Core. My heart is still pounding from it. I will not reveal the plot at all, but if you want to watch a movie that is inspirational, seat gripping, explores the extent of human qualities, destroys the idea of the earth's immortality and goes where your imagination has never gona before..then this is the movie for you. a MUST-SEE!
There was a family, they were very poor, and could only afford meat one night a week. So they would get chicken only on Sundays. The children always looked forward to chicken dinner sunday, because they would get to eat meat. So the mom prepares the chicken, and at dinner distributes the portions. "Drumstick for Timmy, wing for Jenny....", the mom would say as she cut up the pieces. After cutting everything up and putting it on respective plates, the mom would take the remaining chicken. "I'll take the back, because it's the best part", says the mom. Many years passed, and the children all grew up, moved out and had families of their own. One day, Timmy decided to reenact the chicken dinner sunday tradition to share with his own family. He told them that they used to do it every sunday, and it was the best day of the week. So he went out and got a chicken, prepared it, and everyone sat down at the table to have a chicken dinner. Timmy did exactly what his mother did, distributing the chicken parts to his children, leaving the back for himself while saying what his mother said many years ago. "I'll take the back, it's the best part", he said novelly. As Timmy picked at his chicken, he realised that there was no meat on his plate. After 25 years, he learned of his mother's sacrifices and that she went unthanked many a time.
In this safe space of just females, many of the mothers were not afraid to show their tears and wiped their eyes with their lavendar napkins. I felt uncomfortable tho, so didn't really show it. i don't know about the other girls.. I really admired Mary's presence in the room, and her ability to speak so clearly about what meant so much to her.
After the keynote address, mothers and daughters were given the opportunity to get up and share about their own experience. These I will never forget. First was Lena Yasutake, who, if you don't know, is very expressive and sometimes loud..but in a good way :D. She talked about a time when her family did not have enough to eat when she was young. So her mom would go down to a place where they gave out food. She got back a sack of flour, crisco, and gigantic, white, government-made, container of peanut butter. if you ahven't been fortunate enough to have government food, she said, it comes with black and white labels of what food is in it that makes you not want to eat it even more. (was that a run on?). so her mother came back and told her children that they would play a game. they would have to think of all the things they could make with peanut butter...and each night, she would make peanut butter cookies, peanut butter pancakes...lena named a few more, then she burst out crying..and said..peanut butter soup. and she talked about how amazing her mother was, not to complain to her children, not to curse the world, but carried a positive attitude with her that made that time the best and happiest memories for Lena and her siblings.
Then Mrs Boyd came up, and she could hardly control her tears. She talked about seeing Dani, her daughter in ETF (europe stf), the day before. She said that no matter what your children do, you have to love them. There is always pain with love, and if they leave and you don't feel any loss, then, you haven't loved.
Lastly, one of the African American mothers came up. She was a mother of 6 children, the eldest of which was with her, and grandmother of 14! we all clapped and cheered. She started by saying her husband always called her selfish. But he must have been delirious or maybe didn't know what selfish meant. Whenever their couple received an invitation to a wedding dinner or something that did not include their children, she would not want to go. they would have this conversation
h: are we going?
w: WE?!
h: yeah, we
w: you mean, the 8 of us?
h: no, just you and me
w: uhuh, if they ain't takin my children, they ain't takin me.
and I thought that was such a wonderful mother's heart. even for dinner dates with her husband, she would prefer getting 2 chickens for the whole family rather than going to eat steak.. but in this chicken dinner, everyone had plenty to eat :D.
After speeches were done, we had raffle drawing. There was a drawing for 2 tickets to the nail salon. Lena and francesca got it. It was so funny, Francesca bought like 5 tickets, so she got picked 3 times! and when lena was finally picked, she got up whooping and started dancing. haha. then we had another drawing. there were 3 prizes: a lazy susan(twirling thingy you can put things on, usually put in the kitchen and holds spices and other cooking condiments), a cookbook and a bouquet of silk flowers in a nice vase (absolutely beautiful). the first one, mrs boyd won, the second one, we won! whoo..it was a cookbook named 'the healthy cook', which is cool cuz now we have an american cookbook. dont' you get that feeling sometimes b4 you win something that you have won without really knowing? that was how i felt. ::shrug:: lastly, another African American mother got the silk flowers. it ws nice to see that our guests were having such a good time.
overall, i have to say that this was SUPERB. they ahve to do it again. it exceded alll my expectations. and it made me more aware of the mother's heart.
